N°02 — The Story
A vehicle with provenance.
1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 S Ponton (W180) in light blue with brown partial leather interior.
The Mercedes-Benz W180 is a luxury vehicle and is also known as the Ponton due to its design and self-supporting body. A distinction is made between the "large pontoon," the luxury model with 6-cylinder in-line engines (220 and 220S), and the "small pontoon" of the W120/W121 series with smaller four-cylinder engines, which are classified as upper mid-range. The large Ponton replaced the W187 series, which still featured the pre-war design with its free-standing fenders. It was built from 1954 to 1959 and was available as a luxury convertible and coupé in addition to the sedan. The large Ponton was replaced in 1959 by the Mercedes-Benz W111 series with its distinctive tail fins.
